September 6th, 2022

Dear Caregivers,

A big welcome to new students and their families, as well as to returning students and their families! I wanted to quickly touch base with a few KEY ITEMS:

  1. Please quickly fill out this Google Survey that I am utilizing in order to create a specific, music department (information only), confidential email list.  You will receive all the important information regarding our gr.7-9 music trip to the Whistler ‘Cantando’ festival (April 27-30), as well as be kept abreast of all concert, events, performances and fund raising opportunities. In general, In general, tend to not trust that important information will make it home by the good old fashioned hard copy newsletter…
  1. If you utilize Facebook, there will be abbreviated pieces of the above information posted on the following Facebook GROUP: Brock Music Parent/Student GROUP 2022/23

-Please consider requesting to be added to this very helpful “information only” FB group

  1. Another information point that our music department uses (as old-fashioned as it may seem), is my SD73 Bloghttp://jschill.blogs.sd73.bc.ca/

-Here you will find the following tabbed sections: Newsletters,  Student Fund Raising Accounts (listed by student #), Beginner Band APRO SOUNDSTART practice MP3 tracks, Course Outlines and so much more helpful information for creating a positive, home music learning environment.

  1. MUSIC PARENT MEETING on Thursday, September 22nd, from 7-8 p.m. (max), in-person, in the Brock Music room. The field door will be open by 6:40 p.m., and some signs will be placed in the hallway to direct you through the school if you choose to come via an inside route.  We will be discussing how parents can best support their child’s music education experience via all the extra special opportunities planned for the year.  I will require some major parent support in order to make our Whistler trip, in addition to all the other fun activities this year, a full go! It is not daunting, as many hands will make light work! Please consider helping out in the following roles: President, Communications, Fundraiser lead(s), Treasurer, Uniform Manager(s), Equipment Transport, TRIP CO-ORDINATOR(s) and more!

Parents always ask if I would consider them to be a chaperone on our spring trip.  My answer always is:  “Please let me have the chance  to get to know you through volunteering with our Music Parent Group throughout the year.

*Our 2023 spring trip will be to the Whistler “Cantando‘ Festival (April 27th-30th).  The cost for hte trip will include transportation, festival registration fees, hotel, food and all pre-planned group events. The final, exact cost cannot yet be quoted,  (but after working with trip co-ordinators…anyone?) it soon will be. The DRAFT payment schedule is as follows:

Whistler Deposit schedule

  1. Wednesday, October 12th -$150 non-refundable cash deposit #1
  2. Wednesday, November 9th -$150 deposit #2
  3. Wednesday, December 7th -$150 deposit #3
  4. Wednesday, February 1st -$200 final payment
  5. Final payment will depend on balance owing, taking personal student fundraising account balance into consideration

*I would also like to state that a certain amount of financial assistance will be made availabe to any music student who works hard in music class, participates in all fundraising opportuniies to the best of their ability, displays a great attitude and whose famiily requires assistance. Please email jschill@sd73.bc.ca for further information.

  1. Fall Bottle Drive on Saturday, September 24th!

Where: Brock Middle School – front entrance (rain or shine)

When: 10 a.m. (runs until all routes are complete -usually 2.5 hours approx). Maps distriubuted upon sign-in.  If you are available to take additional helping students in your vehicles, please make sure you are able to show at least 1 million, 3rd party liabilty insurance to Mr. Schill at sign-in.

How Much Money Do Students Make: Depends on students turn-out.  It is usualy VERY lucrative as far as bottle drives are concerned. BONUS: NO SORTING (yes…really!).

*Each participating student receives a credit when involved for the full event. Each student receives TWO credits if they bring a vehicle and driver. A credit’s value is determined by the full value of all returnables collected by the entire participating group.

Here’s to another exciting year at Brock Music!

Sincerely,

Mr. Schill

Students are planning to attend Whistler’s ‘Cantando’ Festival, AND for those in Jazz Band, Kelowna’s ‘Interior Jazz Festival’ next year!

For those attending separately from the grade 9 group, please arrive at 7:15 p.m. in the main Sagebrush lobby to pick up your ticket, with theatre appropriate clothing and a great behaviour mindset. As per Sagebrush theatre recommendations, ‘mask wearing is highly encouraged for all audience members.’ Here is a link to Symphony 101: A Newcomer’s Guide https://www.kamloopssymphony.com/symphony101.htm

🎼 Brock Middle Music Department 🎼

October 21st, 2021

Important Dates and Items to Consider for

October – December 2021

Concert Attire:

If your child has music in semester one, they should now be sized for their music department issued black performance shirt.  Students will be given their shirts on performance days, and students will return them the same day, after their performance is complete.

On performance days, students need to wear to school (or bring along – depending on the time of their performance), solid black pants / skirt, solid black shoes & solid black socks / nylons. The operative words here are obviously solid black.  Please plan early enough to have this clothing available for your child’s performance(s).  Please spend as little money as possible on these clothing items, as of course you well know, children grow quickly.  Borrowing from friends and siblings often works great!  Value Village or Walmart are additional great options.  I state a caution regarding high heel shoes, as walking with expensive instruments, at a younger age (often on stairs) can at times not end well.

There may be a few dates added to this…but for now:

  1.  Coffee ☕️ ordered through fundraising will be delivered Monday, October 25th. Let your student know to pick up their order -listen to announcements for the room number. Some orders did not have phone numbers attached, so check your emails in case your student did not pick up their order. If your child has a large order, please pickup your student to help.
  1.  Whistler Trip Meeting for Grade 9 Band Students & Parents:  Tuesday, Nov. 2nd, @ 7 p.m. on ZOOM (live attendance will be an option, here in the music room – enter via field door). Please attend how you feel comfortable.  Please wear a mask if you plan to attend in person. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT MEETING TO CONFIRM THE POSSIBILITIES OF GRADE 9 BAND STUDENTS ATTENDING THE 2022, WHISTLER CANTANDO FESTIVAL. COVID HIT WHILE THESE GRADE 9’s WERE IN THE PROCESS OF FINISHING THEIR 2019 FUNDRAISERS, AND PLANNING TO GO TO WHISTLER. LET’S HELP OUR GRADE 9’s FINISH THEIR JOURNEY AT BROCK WITH GOING TO WHISTLER. 🎺🎷🥁🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
  1. Choir McQueen LakeDay Retreat’ on Friday, November 5th. Notices have been sent home.  Permission forms, plus the $20 fee, are due into the main school office on Monday, October 25th.  Pizza will be provided for lunch!  Please make sure your child brings a warm jacket, appropriate footwear for possible snow, and of course, their music!  The bus will leave at 8:35 a.m., and students will return just before 3 p.m..
  1. Remembrance Day Recording Sessions for Choir and Band 8 classes on Monday, November 8th.  The school day is scheduled as AB.  The above performing students will obtain their black shirts from the music room at the very beginning of LUNCH hour. The recording session for CHOIR students will occur during the first half of ‘B’ block, in the drama room.  The recording session for BAND students will occur during the second half of ‘B’ block, also in the drama room.  Band 8 students will need to come to the music room at the beginning of the afternoon break, in order to help transfer equipment for the session.  The regularly scheduled ‘B’ block teachers of these students will be informed of the fact that the above music students will be absent from a portion of their class this day.  The entire recorded ceremony will be available to watch, via web link.
  1. Our next fundraiser: Gary’s Deli, begins on November 17th. Orders will be available to pick up December 8th -ready to put into the freezer for Christmas. Ask your student to pick up order forms from the music room. As with all fundraisers, all students from both semesters can participate. Please parents be ready to help to pick ups.
  1. BAND 8 McQueen LakeDay Retreat’ on Friday, November 19th. Notices have been sent home.  Permission forms, plus the $20 fee, are due into the main school office on Monday, October 25th.  Pizza will be provided for lunch!  Please make sure your child brings a warm jacket, appropriate footwear for possible snow, and of course, their music & INSTRUMENT!  The bus will leave at 8:35 a.m., and students will return just before 3 p.m..
  1. BAND 8 (PLUS some Band 9’s) are performing in the SANTA CLAUS PARADE 🎅🎄on Saturday EVENING, November 27th.  We will be meeting down-town at the Spirit Square parking lot, at 3: 15 p.,m.. Students will warm-up in a vacant business unit (on the square) that is yet to be determined. It will be easily identified by the sound of instruments and lights! The parade will begin at 4:30 p.m. sharp.  Brock Middle Band will march near the beginning of the line-up.    Students must bring their own instruments.  Mr. Schill will bring the percussion, performance toques, performance scarves, music banner and flags! Students will load their empty instrument cases into a parent vehicle, and that vehicle will meet our band at the terminus of the parade (600 block of Victoria St.).  Please plan to WALK to greet and pick-up your child at this location, as soon as humanly possible.  Our ability to park and wait there will be limited. There will also be hot chocolate and timbits for our awesome young musicians at the end of the parade!  As this performance will be occurring in the evening, students are encouraged to decorate their instruments with some dollar store lighting set-ups (Dollarama?)!  Please plan to do this in advance, as much as possible.  Please make sure that the lighting does not interfere with a student’s ability to actually play their instrument. This will be a blast….of cold air, and fun…so dress warm!  Black pants are not required.  Just be warm!  Toques and scarves will be our uniform for the evening.  Thin gloves will absolutely work for some instruments. More information will be shared, as it becomes available to us, from the Downtown Kamloops Business Association.
  1. Brock Middle Music presents – “Stay Warm, Be Cool”. This will be a ‘Zoom’ Christmas Concert (pre-recorded), debuting on Tuesday, December 14th at 7 p.m., in the coziness of your own living room!.  Ensembles performing will include the semester one Beginner Band, Band 8, Choir 8 and Sr. Jazz Band!  The recording session will occur during the previous school week, and all students will be in their formal concert clothing.  The recordings will occur in our Xmas decorated music room!  Specific recording times will be announced closer to the date.

HOODIES – get your warm and cozy hoodie! Please watch for the order forms to come home. If your child is in music this semester, or the next semester (starting February), hoodie orders will be available to be made now – even for siblings or parents who might want one! Any questions please email Shannon at dsolfert@shaw.ca as she can answer most questions. If your child doesn’t get a form and wants one,  please have them see Mr Schill in the music room.

Hello!! Brock Music 🎵 Family

We have started a new year of our children learning and producing beautiful music “maybe not at home practicing….’yet’ ”. When it all comes together, we will be proud.

1st) We held our first parent music 🎼 meeting by zoom and because of the crazy time the turn out was very low. In order to make the year flow we do need parent volunteers. Please Please if you can help out at all through the year please email Mr Schill at jschill@sd73.bc.ca
Please give him your name number or email so the music committee can reach out when we need help.

2nd) We have started fundraising and your child should have grabbed order forms for apples 🍎 through NuLeaf.

You probably want to know why we are fundraising this year especially since Whistler can’t happen with Covid still effecting our lives.

Well because of Covid we can’t have our regular performances where we can all go and enjoy what our children have worked so hard on. So the plan this year is to have professionals produce a Almumn / CD for all parents, grandparents, and friends to enjoy safely. There will be more info to come.

3rd) Hoodies again will be offered to all Music 🎶 Students PLEASE watch for order forms and more info.

Any questions please reach out to Mr Schill and he will forward your questions to the right committee member or answer himself.

Have a great week everyone!

Cheers from the
Music 🎵 Committee

Hello Brock Music Parents & Guardians,

Three fundraising points and a general reminder:

1)The second Global Coffee fundraiser began today!  Students can pick up form & envelope at the band room and get out to help those from the first round restock their new favourite beans and let others in on the goodness! Forms and funds are due on Friday, Feb 21st.  We CANNOT ACCEPT LATE ORDERS so be sure to get it in a day or two earlier in the week if at all possible.

2) We are sorry to report that we’ve had to cancel the Icaridin Insect Repellent fundraiser due to circumstances beyond our control. However, for those who are still interested in that push to meet their fundraising totals…

3) The Superstore Bagging Fundraiser still has spots available for students.  Feb. Saturday 29th from 11am to 3pm served in one or two hour shifts. See the previous email or contact brockmusicprogram@gmail.com for any questions.

General reminder: Festivals are just around the corner and ALL students should be practicing regularly to prepare for their performances!  Thanks so much for your encouragement on the home front!

Sincerely,

-Brock Music Parent Committee

Hello Brock Parents & Guardians,

One email in two parts. Here we go!

First, a reminder that pick up for Fresh Is Best is tomorrow afternoon –Thurs 30th – at 3pm. There are some big chip and dip orders so plan accordingly!

The updated fundraising totals including Fresh is Best and the Bottle Drive is now up on the Music department website.  Shout out to super-awesome treasurer Ricki who has been crunching all the numbers for us. THANK YOU!

As you review totals, please keep in mind that there are three more individual fundraising opportunities coming this month:

  1. Icadarin insect repellent (an alternative to deet) from Avon. Sales will run from February 10th to 21st with delivery in late April – just in time to start keeping those bugs at bay!

  1. Global Coffee is BACK! Due to repeated requests, we’ve decided to run this fundraiser alongside the Icadarin repellent one, so dates will run Feb 10th to 21st.

  1. NEW: Last month we were able to secure an opportunity for students to bag groceries for donations at Superstore. Save the date: February 28th from 11am to 3pm. More information will be forthcoming next week on how we’ll fill slots for this event since it has a finite number of spaces. We’ll also need parent supervisors to help out as well.

You also may have heard that the Brock PAC provided funding for new shirts for our music department earlier in the year. We still have the old ones which are being made available for sale for $5 each. To purchase one, students pay at the office and then take their receipt to Mr. Schill.  This offer is available until the Friday before Spring Break.

Thanks everyone for all you do!

Sincerely,

-Brock Music Parent Committee

And………..

**A Note from Mr. Schill:  WHISTLER is coming…but with this excitement, the non-negotiable is that home practice should be increasing.  Beginner band students need to be showing Mr. Schill their weekly parent / guardian initialed practice record (110 minutes minimum average weekly practice for ‘A’ level) at the end of the first class of each week. There will be many fun times on this trip, but our primary focus of a high quality performance remains paramount. My expectation is that our student ensemble performances will be something that students can be proud of for years to come.

Beginner Band Students: Your Concert B flat major scale should already be memorized, and your B flat chromatic scale must be memorized asap.  Get a free SLUSH on Mr. Schill for performing that chromatic scale by memory for him! Continue to work hard on your three newest pieces:  One for All, All for One, Spirit of the Wolf and Longthorpe Tower.

Intermediate & Advanced Bands:  Your HOME practicing, without saying, should be a minimum of 110 minutes per week, if not more.  Advance March, Twilight Tango & And So He Loved the Bow, need to be your primary focus.

Choir Members: Please make sure you know your individual parts. Utilize recordings, ask fellow section singers for assistance or Mr. Schill!

Both the Kamloops Festival of the Arts [KFPA] (Choirs) and the SD73 Arts in the High Country Festival (all bands) will be happening on March 2nd and 3rd respectively.

  1. KFPA Choir Evening (Monday evening, March 2nd):

Where:  Sagebrush Theatre (entrance through stage door) for performers.

How:  Students are responsible to arrange their own rides from parents, friends (carpooling) and/or bus.  Please make sure that your son/ daughter has a back-up transportation plan if for some reason Plan A suddenly falls through.

When: 6:20 p.m. call time, show starts at 7:00 p.m., and our festival class will be finished sometime around 8 p.m.

Cost:  Admission is FREE for the public, donations will be accepted towards KFPA.

Attire:  Standard concert clothing (solid black pants, shoes, socks, and no jewellery).  Brock Middle Music Department performance shirts will be distributed at 6:20 p.m.  We will begin warming up at 6:45 p.m.

  1. SD73 Arts in the High Country Festival (Tuesday, March 3rd):

Where:  Sagebrush Theatre (entrance through stage door) for performers.

How: School bus transportation

When: **Specific performance times for each ensemble will be shared as soon as we know more, and a few parent drivers and bus chaperones will be required. Stay tuned for permission forms coming home in the next few weeks.

Cost:  Admission is FREE for the public.

Attire:  Standard concert clothing (solid black pants, shoes, socks, and no jewellery).  Brock Middle Music Department performance shirts will be distributed from the music room from 7:45 -8:25 a.m., and shirts are to be returned to the music room shirt bins immediately upon returning to the school

Sincerely,

Mr. Schill

January 6th, 2020

Happy New Year!

A quick update on what’s coming next:

  1. Winter Bottle Drive is THIS SATURDAY, JAN. 11th!!! We get started at 10 a.m. and meet inside the main doors at Brock Middle – RAIN OR SHINE (or SNOW). We’ll be canvassing the Brock East neighbourhood.  Students who participate get one share in the overall take (after 10% tithe to general funds) towards their fundraising goal.  We’ll need parent drivers, too, and one vehicle + driver = an additional share for the student. See you there!
  2. Kamloops Sagebrush Symphony Orchestra: Signed permissions forms are due TOMORROW – Tuesday, January 7th with $7 for any students who wish to attend the performance on Friday 10th.  Form and money must of course be handed into the main school office.
  3. The Fresh Is Best fundraiser has begun!  Forms are available now in the band room for any who wish to participate in this individual fundraiser.  Forms and monies MUST be into the office by Wednesday, January 15th!  Delivery is on Jan. 30th (in time for the Superbowl). If you’re not already familiar with these excellent chips and dips from this Kamloops-based company, you’re in for a treat!
  4. A quick note that we’ll be participating in two parallel fundraisers again in February: Icaridin repellent (an alternative to deet insect repellent) AND, since it was successful and there has been multiple requests for more of that great coffee, Global Coffee will be sold again.  Keep an eye out for details.
  5. Whistler Trip Payments: A quick reminder that another $125 payment is due on Jan. 31st.  Our (super-awesome) treasurer will be updating the fundraiser/payment spreadsheet in the coming weeks to update you on overall totals after the Christmas concert fundraisers.
  6. Whistler Chaperoning (April 30th – May 3rd):  If you would officially like to be considered for the position of a trip chaperone, regardless of whether or not you have indicated to Mr. Schill previously, please email: jschill@sd73.bc.caAt no financial cost, you will also be required to complete an RCMP vulnerable sector check.  All requests to chaperone must be submitted no later than Friday, January 17th.  Vulnerable sector checks will occur AFTER January 17th. Preference is always given to parents who have been actively volunteering throughout the year, and Mr. Schill is the person who determines the chaperones attending.  Consideration is also given in regards to having a proportionate balance of male and female chaperones. There will be zero cost to chaperone. There will be at least 2 mandatory chaperone pre-trip meetings on the following dates:

#1    Thursday, April 2nd from 7-8 p.m. in the Brock music room

#2    Thursday, April 23rd from 6-7 p.m. in the Brock conference room

Hope you all had a great holiday and we’ll see you at Saturday’s bottle drive!

Sincerely,

Brock Music Parent’s Committee

If your child is in this ensemble, please remind them to practice along with the following excellent YouTube choir performance of ‘The Reluctant Dragon’

2.  A reminder that School Remembrance Day ceremonies happen this Friday, Nov. 8th in the morning. Intermediate & Advanced Bands, and both Choir classes will be performing.

I am very proud of our two band members, and six choir members!  The ensembles are sounding excellent.  Even if your son / daughter is not in this year’s performing groups, taking them to the concert can be an inspirational moment which will encourage them to galvanize their efforts in order to audition next fall!

October 16th, 2019

Dear Parents / Guardians of ‘F’ Block Treble Voice Choir,

Hopefully you have already heard your child mention that we are working on an piece of music entitled “The Reluctant Dragon”, written by one of the most famous choral composers of the 20th century – John Rutter.

In addition, you may have also been told that we have been invited to perform this work jointly with maestro Dr. Cvetozar Vutev’s choral ensemble, Vivace Chorale. This performance will be at their Saturday, Dec. 7th evening concert.

‘The Reluctant Dragon’ is 24 minutes in length, involves a few costumes, some narration, and of course a fire breathing dragon!

Dr. Vutev has invited our ‘F’ block choir to rehearse with Vivace Chorale, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Kamloops United Church downtown (421 St. Paul St.) on the following Wednesday evenings:

1. Wednesday, October 30th

2. Wednesday, November 6th

3. Wednesday, November 27th

It is very important that all ‘F’ block singers attend these rehearsals, as Dr. Vutev will be rehearsing this piece with specific suggestions as to how he would like to see it performed. Dr. Vutev will be the conductor for ‘The Reluctant Dragon’ at the Dec. 7th concert. Please make sure your son / daughter arrives prior to 6:30 p.m., as that is when the rehearsal promptly begins.

These rehearsals will also have an exceptionally gifted accompanist present to play the very challenging piano part.

I look forward to seeing everyone at these Wednesday evening rehearsals.

Students may practice their parts by singing along with a recording at:

Hello Music Parents!

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Brock Music Department! While much of your child’s music learning will happen at school, there are many opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. Read on to find out more!

Music Parents Meeting THIS Thursday, September 19th from 7- 8pm (max.) in the Band Room at Brock Middle. This is a VERY IMPORTANT meeting that provides you with information for the year. This will also include roles that need to be filled on the Music Parent’s Committee (see attached for role descriptions), other ways you can support your child throughout the year and plans for how students can fundraise for their (optional but highly recommended) trip to Whistler (spring of 2020)! Which brings us to…

Our traditional first BOTTLE DRIVE fundraiser</b> of the year on Saturday, Sept. 21st at 10:00a.m. We meet inside Brock’s entranceway foyer and collect until we’re done (usually around 1 p.m.).

This is for ALL music students, and while we certainly need parent drivers, they are not mandatory. Students who attend get one share in the overall amount toward their fundraising goals. Those who can bring parent drivers will get an additional share!

Parent drivers who wish to drive children that are not their own will need to show Mr. Schill proof of at least one million liability insurance on their vehicle (bring insurance papers into foyer).

Many hands make light work, so start collecting from friends and family while you’re at it! We go rain or shine, so dress for the weather.

***Shout out and a big thanks to General Grants for their additional help with this fundraiser!!***

Beginner Band: Students should have their instrument assigned by today (Tuesday), assuming they were present for class. Practicing should begin regularly in a quiet place away from distracting screens. Standing is recommended, or sitting on the edge of a firm chair for good posture. Please consider obtaining a music stand.

WHISTLER “Cantando” Festival: Apr. 30 – May 3rd, 2020

This trip to Whistler, which runs every three years (and to Sun Peaks on the other two years), is an optional but highly recommended event for all music students. Mr. Schill has been very impressed with the quality of this festival and finds the value worth the cost. Students perform, take in other concerts, and participate in instrument-specific clinics. The overall cost is expected to be no more than $625 and there are PLENTY of fundraising opportunities planned throughout the year to help along any students wishing to go.

The payment schedule is as follows:

Sept 27th – $125 Non-refundable DEPOSIT.

Oct 25th – $125

Nov 22nd – $125

Dec 16th – $125

Jan 31st – $125

Feb 28th – Balance owing.

*Please note that all monies are to be paid at the main office (on or before their due dates) as Mr. Schill is unable to issue receipts.* Please ALWAYS have your son / daughter ask for a receipt for your records.

Thanks for sticking with us to the end of this email. Please come out to the meeting on Thursday for more information, as well, don’t hesitate to contact Mr. Schill after that with any further questions. We have a Facebook group (open only to music department parents and students) – Brock Parent/Students Music Group 2019/20 which will also begin carrying information, as well as Mr. Schill’s Blog under Teacher Blogs on the Brock site:

See you on Thursday!
