I hope you are all enjoying a glorious summer vacation, and getting rested. I am emailing to let you know about the upcoming opportunity SD 73 will be providing to dedicated, committed singers from grades 8-12 in our district.
This year, our SD 73 Senior Honour Choir experience will be offered in collaboration with TRU and the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra. Rather than a single intensive weekend of study, students will have a 6-week opportunity to extend their learning through working with Tomas Bijok, the director of TRU Chamber Chorus, and to join in the KSO in their October performance of Carmina Burana and Dungeon Hunter. This opportunity to work with world-renowned conductor, Dina Gilbert, and working intensively with an award-winning university chamber choir, will allow you to grow both as a singer and to forge connections with singers and musical leaders in our community. This is an opportunity to train in a professional environment and will be a wonderful way not only to build your own experience but also to add to your resume.
Performances with the KSO will be Friday October 26, and Saturday October 27. We will also perform a short set at the Honour Choir and Band gala concert on November 5.
Rehearsals will take place on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings during the months of September and October. Attendance at these rehearsals is mandatory for students committing to the Sd 73 Senior Honour Choir. (Please see the attached PDF for the KSO rehearsal schedule, and keep in mind that Wednesday evenings will be with the TRU Chamber Chorus and Tomas Bijok. More detailed information will be provided to those accepted into the Honour Choir).
Because of the slight change in format, auditions and rehearsals are going to be earlier than usual to ensure that all singers have ample rehearsal time to learn the music. Auditions this year will be held on Saturday, September 15th, at the Henry Grube Center. Please see the attached information for audition preparation. One of our goals is to foster students’ leadership skills through the honour choir experience. Please indicate in your email if you would like to be considered for a formal leadership role within the choir this year. Only students in grade 11 and 12 with teacher recommendation will be considered for these positions.
